My long time friend Harold Mills and I started working on his little AMC Spirit in 1991 and built it to run in SCCA SoloII events. I was runner up in the Texas Region in C-Prepared with a 4.0L 6 cylinder in the car(we had to run it against the V8 Mustangs and Camaro's!). We later tired of autocrossing and decided to go back drag racing. We changed up the suspension on the car to make it a little more straight-line friendly and discovered that our "mild hydraulic cammed" motor made some pretty good power! It is an honest to god AMC 360 that has run a best of 6.91 in the 1/8 mile. Not too bad if you knew how the motor was built! We are currently working on a fresh motor for the car.....a 390....that is a serious motor. I now have my own car. A 1979 AMC Spirit with a tired 304 in it. So far I have thrown a cam, headers, gears and great big Holley 2 bbl at it and have made a very consistant package. The second race I took it to I ran back to back dead-on-dials and won the event! It ain't very fast but it is fun. UPDATE: I have my new motor in the car now..... 368 CID of raw power! I built the motor to run on the 12.0 index and have a motor that would live a long time and run on pump gas. After a dozen or so runs down the 1/8 mile I got to make my first 1/4 mile pass at the Outsiders race in Tulsa. First pass was a 12.05! The car gets quicker each pass while the motor is seating in and so far have run a best of 7.491 1/8 mile with a 1.61 60 foot time. 2004 Results: Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge : Stock Muscle Class Winner Denton Dragway Factory Muscle Runner up Cherokee County Motorsports Park Texas Outsiders : Nostalgia Muscle Car class Winner Denton Dragway 2005 Results: Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge : Runner up Texas Raceway Runner up Redline Raceway Texas Outsiders : First round winner Tulsa (and then it rained!) |
